The first thing that Jesus elaborated on after the model prayer was forgiveness. Sin is a debt against God, not against us, so we have to give up the burden of that debt to the one who truly bears the debt of that sin. If we are unwilling to forgive others, we will bear a great burden and conviction by the Lord instead of having assurance of God’s forgiveness of us.
